About Mark Bixby

Long Beach native Mark Bixby (June 1966 – March 2011) was a member of one of the most influential families in the history of Long Beach. As one of the preeminent bicycle advocates in the city Mark was a member of “Off the Front,” as well as the founding director of the Long Beach Bike Festival. As a member of the board of directors of Bikeable Communities he was the driving force behind the effort to ensure a bike and pedestrian facility will be included on the new billion-dollar Gerald Desmond Bridge. Much of what Long Beach has accomplished in the last three years in the bike friendly realm has been due in great part to Mark's vision, passion, hard work and most of all his ability to connect with and influence a broad array of people in a positive way.

Long Beach California – Long Beach’s lead bicycle advocate Mark Bixby’s last triumph in supporting Long Beach to become “the most bicycle friendly city in the nation” happened at the Port of Long Beach Harbor Commission meeting on Monday March 14th 2011 just two days before his untimely death on Wednesday March 16, 2011 in a plane crash. At the meeting the port staff presented a new position – and one that Mark had been advocating passionately for – general contractors bidding for the bridge project will be required to include both separated bicycle and pedestrian paths in their proposals.

According to Dr. Bob Kanter, Environmental Planning director for the Port "the solicitation package to the design-build team bidders will require their bid include a Class One bike and pedestrian path on the Gerald Desmond Bridge. The bike path is a mandatory requirement. When the bid is received it must include those elements in order to be a responsive bid." He also noted, “The coastal trail path...is part of the project...it will be built in addition to the class 1 path.” The plan is to serve a larger cycling and pedestrian community and create access all around the Port.

“We’re elated that the Harbor Commissioners, Port staff and Caltrans have come to understand the importance of including bicycle and pedestrian access on the new bridge,” said Martin Howard, a longtime friend of Bixby’s and a fellow board member of Bikeable Communities, a nonprofit advocacy organization. “You only have one opportunity to build a billion-dollar bridge in a century. And Mark felt passionately that the bridge needed to be constructed to benefit everyone and to connect as many places as possible. He called it, ‘the bridge to everywhere.”

As a member of the non-profit bicycle advocacy group Bikeable Communities, Bixby was tireless in his efforts to educate and inspire all parties involved to understand the importance of these facilities both to the Port with its focus on sustainability, and the City as it endeavors to become one of the most bike-friendly cities in the nation. Through Bixby’s efforts, Bikeable Communities leadership and volunteers worked in partnership with nearly 20 organizations, clubs and advocacy groups to raise awareness of the need for bicycle and pedestrian paths to create viable and safe routes to Terminal Island. The support of the California Coastal Commission (Deputy Director John Ainsworth supplied Mark with a specific letter of support for the March 14th meeting), the Sierra Club, the League of American Cyclists, Long Beach Cyclists, Vice Mayor and 2nd District Council member Suja Lowenthal and many more were critical to the success of the outreach effort.

In her response to the Harbor Commissioners’ decision, Lowenthal stated: "This bridge will be the envy of cities not only in the state, but around the globe. I hope the commissioners see this as an opportunity to showcase the many advances that the Port has made in goods movement and green technology, bringing residents and visitors to the best location from which to view a working port. If I can just say how very excited I am at this possibility; it would be an understatement. I think it really is more than iconic it is such a progressive bold step made on behalf of this board. And that is just in your DNA. You have continually taken bold progressive steps. And this is just the next installation. I thank you for that.”

Commissioner Mario Cordero, the longest sitting Harbor Commissioner, and one of the original Green Port supporters voiced his strong support for the bike and pedestrian path: "The more I have read about what's involved...and examined statements from other policy makers...like the federal government and like Caltrans, our partner on this project, it seems to me that we must consider a clear policy so there is no misunderstanding of the feasibility of the Class One route on the bridge. We are only going to build one bridge for the next century here in Long Beach. I now very much see implementation of a Class One pedestrian and bike facility as an integral part of the bridge."

Chris Quint, a co-founder of Long Beach Cyclists, cycling safety instructor and car-free-by-choice cyclist pointed out in his remarks to the commissioners, fully one-third of adult Americans don’t own an automobile either because they can’t afford a car or choose not to own one. Many of these people, noted Quint, commute by bicycle.

Advocates and professionals alike who worked with Bixby on bicycle and community related issues appear to all agree there could be no greater tribute to the passionate leader than to see the bicycle and pedestrian path on the new Gerald Desmond Bridge named in Bixby’s honor. “It was Bixby's vision, passion, negotiating skills, work-ethic and ability to forge a collaborative coalition that took the bike and ped path from concept to a world-class idea that will impact thousands for generations to come,” said Howard. “His leadership and vision on many issues will be sorely missed by many in Long Beach, but in particular, by the cycling community.”

For beachgreens founder Aliye Aydin her Turkish heritage and love of travel have deeply influenced her love of food, as did the frightening diagnosis of chronic kidney disease at age fifteen. From that time forward she has dedicated her life to the deep understanding of the growing, cultivating, distributing and preparing of the best and healthiest of what nature has to offer.

Now over fifteen years later, and completely free of kidney disease, Aliye feels the diagnosis helped direct her career path. She studied nutrition at U.C. Berkeley, trained as a chef at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Food and Health in Manhattan, and recently received a “Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship” from the Bainbridge Graduate Institute in Seattle, a school on the forefront of teaching sustainable business practices through its MBA program.

Aliye has also worked on organic farms around the country, in restaurants, as a personal chef and caterer, and as a cooking instructor. In her hometown of Long Beach California she worked to develop a network of community and school gardens with the local non- profit Long Beach Organic prior to starting beachgreens in 2007.

With beachgreens Aliye brings fresh organic and sustainably grown produce (from local farms no more than 300 miles away) directly to her clients in the greater Long Beach area.
Re: New York Times Best Selling Author Christopher Rice Makes Appearance at Western Arts Alliance Conference in Long Beach on September 1st!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long Beach CA – New York Times best selling author and public speaker Christopher Rice will make an appearance at the Western Arts Alliance Conference on Wednesday September 1st at the Long Beach Convention Center from 10:30 am to noon. KMP Artists invites you to meet Rice at their booth #820. For appointment requests and speaking engagements for 2010/2010 please contact info@kmpartists.com or call (773) 294-9816. Interviews on the exhibit hall floor are subject to approval from the floor supervisor at the Western Arts Alliance Conference and media must check-in at the Press Desk for access.

About Christopher Rice

At just 32 years old Christopher Rice comes from a family of authors and was first published at 22. His parents are Anne Rice and the late poet Stan Rice; his aunt, Alice Borchardt, is also a noted writer. Now at just 32 four of his books are New York Times best-sellers and his latest novel The Moonlit Earth was published in April of this year by Simon and Schuster.

With KMP Artists as tour manager, Christopher does public speaking, community enrichment lectures, and interactive conversations with fans throughout the United States inspiring writers everywhere. Rice speaks about writing in the South in Louisiana and now in Southern California. A warm and engaging speaker Rice has David Sedaris like humor and talks about growing up the son of Anne Rice, contemporary American novels, and a variety of specialty topics. He also hosts various writing workshops.

When asked in 2002 about "being pegged a 'gay writer,' " Rice replied:

“That's not what I do. I might be more open to that label if I hadn't introduced ensemble casts of characters. Granted, A Density of Souls is as close to a gay book as you can get. It revolves around a character's homosexuality, and others are described in terms of their reaction to the one character's sexuality. In that sense it's at the core of the book. The Snow Garden is about identity. With this book, I'm trying to shrug off the term "gay" author.”

Nonetheless, Rice is proud of his large following in the gay community, explaining "it was incredibly rewarding when I got a huge positive response from the character Stephen in A Density of Souls. More than a thousand young gay men contacted me and said that I captured what it was like for them going through those years. That means everything to me." Rice also writes a regular feature for the LGBT-related biweekly news magazine The Advocate called "Coastal Disturbances," in which he discusses various topics. You can learn more about him at www.christopherricebooks.com.

Long Beach CA - Looking for ways to beat the heat this summer and enjoy low cost fun for a healthy family outing? Fit life expert Kerri Zane invites you to visit Long Beach California’s rolling revolution and tour the impressive changes the city has in play towards the goal of becoming “the most bicycle friendly city in America.”

Lifestyle Television executive and Fit Life expert Zane was so impressed with her hometown’s progressive Bike Long Beach program she decided to create a visual virtual tour to invite Southern California to see what the buzz is all about! Long Beach has been ranked #23 in Bicycle Magazine’s top 100 Bike Friendly City’s for 2010. Its bike program has been profiled in The Los Angeles Times and featured on both LA Streetsblog.org and Streetfilms.org. View her short intro to “Welcome to Bike Long Beach” here and view the complete video here.

Follow Zane as she shares a side of Long Beach not often viewed in the popular media! Tour the city’s charming neighborhoods and hear from key players as they illustrate how Long Beach has created the political will to make safe bicycling a top priority for its citizens and visitors. The video features Mayor Bob Foster, Long Beach Bike Ambassador Olympic Cyclist Tony Cruz, the city’s nationally recognized Mobility Coordinator Charlie Gandy and more in an inspiring story of urban/suburban renewal.

With first lady Michelle Obama calling the country to action on childhood obesity, Utah now the only state with an obesity rate of under 20%, and last month’s report in The Archives of Internal Medicine on the long term weight loss benefits for women of cycling and brisk walking, Zane is calling Southern Californians to get out of their cars and enjoy instead a summer of fit fun through bicycling.

Did you know that a majority of car trips are under two miles? That’s a very short trip on a bike. Long Beach’s own Mayor Bob Foster has already lost over ten pounds by riding his bike to work a few times a week. Zane notes that, “Spending time outdoors on a bike is breezy, beautiful and fun. It’s like burning calories without effort.” She goes on to share that a 150-lb women can kill an average of 140 calories for a moderate 20-minute ride (i.e. that quick trip to the store). If you kick it up a notch and try an intense bike ride your calorie burn increases to 190 for a 20-minute ride. To really get your body going the best kind of bike workout is an interval ride that combines five-minute moderate riding followed by intense three-minute sprints for a total of 20 minutes.

Fun Long Beach Bicycling Facts

Did you know Long Beach is home to the first Sharrows in Southern California? The famous green stripe in the beautiful coast hugging Belmont Shore neighborhood of Long Beach teaches motorists and cyclists to safely share the road. Did you know Long Beach is the home of Bikestation, the first organization placing a series of bike transit centers throughout the country? A passionate guide for how a fit lifestyle can literally save your life, Zane also happens to be an Emmy award winning television producer. Thursday night June 10th at 7:00 pm her fun, insightful and informative video homage to the city’s goal of becoming the most bicycle friendly city in the nation “Welcome to Bike Long Beach” debuts with the second showing of Michael Bauch’s inspiring “Riding Bikes with the Dutch” at 2025 E. 4th St. in Long Beach. Tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased at http://www.arttheatrelongbeach.com/. Press passes are available. Mayor Bob Foster will be in attendance. The city’s Bike Ambassador Tony Cruz and the city’s Mobility Coordinator Charlie Gandy will act as the evening’s hosts.

At the beginning of 2010 Zane approached Long Beach’s mobility coordinator Charlie Gandy with the idea of creating a series of videos to educate both the public and the press about the great strides Long Beach is making with the bike program. Gandy took the idea to the city powers that be and within a very short period of time the video was in production. Everyone from Mayor Bob Foster, Senator Alan Lowenthal, Council Member Gary DeLong, Long Beach Bike Ambassador Tony Cruz and more were lined up to share the vision and goals that highlight the importance of bike campaign and what it can mean not only for Long Beach’s citizens, but to cities around the nation looking for health and safety inspiration.

Acting as host, Zane shares with viewers how beautiful and enjoyable Long Beach is to tour by bicycle, important safety and health tips (did you know 50% of people live within five miles of their work, only a twenty minute bike ride?), what innovative projects Long Beach already has in place (such as the award winning Sharrows in Belmont Shore) and what the city has in the works next (the groundbreaking Vista and Broadway & 3rd protected bike boulevards.

Home to the nation’s first Bikestation, Long Beach is currently ranked #23 of the top 50 bike cities in the nation by Bicycling Magazine. With this first promo piece Zane hopes to create enough buzz and interest to create an on-going video promotion campaign to track the city’s progress and inspire local citizens to embrace the bicycle as a healthy, fun and sustainable choice for short trips throughout the city, and tourists looking for an enjoyable place to visit with their whole family.
