Don't Rely on Anyone's Imagination Show Them Your Best
Monday, April 19, 2010 at 09:20AM Yesterday was a big day. I attended two mandatory RFP (request for proposal) meetings at the city of Long Beach in regards to their Bike Long Beach program. It's public record who downloaded the application so my partner and I knew ahead of time that all kinds of people were coming in from our more glamorous neighbors north (Los Angeles) and south (Orange County). So I made an effort. I blew dry my hair straight and put on a beautiful new Dione von Furstenberg wrap dress.
Normally I'm pretty casual, but I've decided to re-think this approach. I'm especially re-thinking it now that my friend publicist Michelle Shortencarrier (who also attended the meeting) exclaimed when she saw me, "Wow! You look great! I didn't even recognize you!"
One of the biggest lessons I've learned in life is that if you don't show most people exactly what you're capable of they can't imagine it. And if you want a chance at bigger and better? You'd better find a way to successfully illustrate that even more. Most people just don't go through life looking to discover talent, they're looking for someone who already knows how to successfully handle the job.
Fortunately we live in an era where technology has been made quite inexpensive, and it now allows us to do so many things - videos, great photography, digital press kits, great websites and more!
Generation Jones lifestyle expert Kerri Zane
Showing people what's possible is the reason this weekend I'll be working with my client nutritionist Susan Dopart (yes that's her book above) and my good friend Generation Jones lifestyle expert and television producer Kerri Zane, to create a few promotional video shorts for Susan that will show off the talents of both ladies in a fun, interative way and let people know Susan has written the only complete roadmap for nutrition called, "A Recipe for Life by the Doctor's Dietitian."
We are all clear that this is a visual, "sound bite" age. We need to show off not only that Susan is a top notch expert, but that she is also warm, engaging and enjoyable to listen to. I'm so excited. We have three great segments planned out and I'll be sharing the results soon.
This is also why I'm excited as I prepare for my next "Creating Synergy, Synchronicity & Sizzle" social media class here in Long Beach for the Belmont Shore Business Association. It's such a great section of Long Beach, but it still has so much that can be discovered and shared and engaged.
I'm also continuing to take my own advice, and I'm in the process of creating a full Media Room to illustrate just what the heck it is I do for my clients rather than simply posting press releases. My goal is to have a case study ready soon as well!
Social media-yoga-branding-finding the humanity in technology expert Gwen Bell (and boy it works for her, check her out) is on the cover of the print edition of Experience Life Magazine this month. Check out her blog here on the creation process of a cover, complete with story/image boards to get the right feel for the cover photo.
What is it that you'd like to do next? What are you waiting for someone to give you permission to do? Don't wait! Have a creative brain storm with your friends and think of ways you can cost effectively help each other show yourselves off to your best advantage.
